The Palace premises comprise courtyards and fountains, as well as, the Nasrid buildings that served as living quar- ters for the monarchs. The oldest building is the Alcazaba citadel. One of the most important structures is the La Vela tower, which offers lovely views of the City. The courtyard of the Lions with its fountains is one of the most beautiful in the complex. The Generalife gardens were partially constructed as far back as 1319, and reflect the old layout of an Arab villa, with their arrangement of patios and viewing points. Malaga is a joy to stroll around, where you also can discover a Roman amphitheatre, the historic Alcazaba, a palace - fortress which dates from the 11th-century with caliphal horseshoe arches, court- yards and fountains; the Gibralfaro Castle (14th century) and the Malagueta city becah. In addition to the painter's House-Museum, the best example is the Picasso Museum, founded in 2003, it was an answer to a wish of the artist himself that his work be represented in the city of his birth and it features more than 200 works covering the different styles, materials and techniques used by the great artist. Another visit not to be missed is to the Carmen Thyssen Museum with its excellent collection of 19th-century Spanish painting.
